One trend in higher education that I just don't get is the rush to establish fully-operating branches abroad. It seems like a stupid way to try to make money - and Michigan State found out that it didn't work for them.

We had a branch campus in the south of France which was, by all reports, lovely for the faculty and students who visited there but a complete financial boondoggle. We got out more than a decade ago but I keep seeing other universities diving into this craziness. It's all about prestige, me thinks!
