Politico: Democrats' Worst Nightmare
"The presidency is sometimes about symbolism and not just substance," said Bob Shrum, who help craft Senator John Kerry's response to the late-October message from Osama bin Laden that was a pivotal point in the 2004 campaign - and learned a painful lesson in the uneven political playing field on the question of terrorism, at least at that time. You know, I don't really want symbolism of tough decisiveness from President Obama - on the issue of terrorist attacks over American soil I wan the substance of tough decisiveness. I've gotten neither, so far. I don't want someone to "appear presidential," as the piece at Politico would have it. I want someone to be President of the United States of America.
Back in the 80's there was a Saturday Night Live sketch that helped me understand the liberal mind. Reagan is dozing at a cabinet meeting; in fact, everyone is, while someone (the David Stockman character?) drones on and on. When everyone falls asleep Reagan perks up. The Red Phone rings. Reagan answers in Russian. Things get animated and presidential (in the way Politico thinks we want Obama to "appear").
Eventually he hangs up, the secretaries of this'n'that wake up, and Reagan goes back to his bumbling, SNL self. Laughter was very mixed, if I remember.
Wish fulfillment, you see. I suddenly wondered if even the left WANTED to know that Reagan was President.
