Rice Stadium - attendance defeat!
My university - 2,400 students in my day - has a stadium that seats 72,000. Yes, 3 zeros. They have given up on ever filling the end zones.
Click on the picture to go to my flickr stream - there were great banners on the concourses - on one side they had photos of famous football players. On the reverse, Nobel prize winners. That's Rice for you.

I live in this area and because I am a big runner, I frequent the campus on my runs; I think it is 2.9 miles around. On my Saturday run while Rice played Tulane, it looked as though there were no people in attendance; I feel bad for those athletes. But, Rice is the smallest or second smallest D1 school in the nation.

With so many professional sports teams in the area it may be harder to compete. It's one of the reasons why up here in Boston, college sports don't get as much attention.
.....Yep, it was opened in 1957 - back then there was no professional football in Texas and U of Houston barely had a football team. RICE was the biggest game in Texas south of College Station. --MCT

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
and early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Don't forget that a SuperBowl was held there in the '70s (miami-minnesota).
the closest I saw it to full was when A&M, UT, or LSU came to town.
