iPhone 3.0.1 - did YOU did this to my contacts?

My contact list just doubled in length - literally. Each contact on my iPhone is now duplicated.

The only change I've made in the last little while is installing iPhone 3.0.1, which had a bug fix for a security problem.

Address book on my laptop does not have duplicate listings.

Argh!

When that happened to me it was because I had two Macs syncing to each other directly and the two Macs and the iPhone also syncing with .mac. The fix I found was to shut off the two way sync and shut off the sync with the older Mac. I then stopped all .mac syncs between the iPhone and the remaining Mac until I had its contacts and calendar right. Erased the iPhones contacts and calendars and restarted the .mac sync.

That's better than what happened to me when iSync decided to sync Address Book and Entourage. Wiped out all email addresses, snail mail addresses and phone numbers. The only help I could get was the comment that I should've backed everything up. Hindsight, 20-20...
