Margot Gayle, historic preservationist, R.I.P.
For all that the rhetoric of historical preservation annoys me (and just you wait until you start reading about efforts to preserve the historic character of Split Levels - it's coming to your subdivision) Margot Gayle was important - she helped invent the entire movement in America.
My favorite of her works listed in the obituary was one of her first - the Committee of Neighbors to Get the Clock on the Jefferson Market Courthouse Started. Calvert Vaux's Jefferson Market is one of my favorite bits of whimsy in New York City. I don't know how it works as a public library branch - though the reading room is great looking! - but I love to look at it.
