No, moving the sculptures from exposure to the chemically-hostile Greek environment is the only thing that might save them!

The translation is correct. Of course you have to see them in their togas, tunics, and chlamis to realize the true kitsch of the situation. The "sacrifice" was just a choe of red wine. Athena wouldn't even blink...
