When local marketing trumps history and archaeology
This is a fascinating piece on an instance when archaeology didn't excite the locals - because it conflicted with their marketing scheme. Or you could call it a time when the finds didn't fit the story they want to tell. Or some such.
Ancient Chiusi was known for its water cure. So is modern Chianciano.
A major excavation found Roman remains stretching over a long period. The excavators tried to get an archaeological park there, but were finally forced to fill in their diggings.
You see, modern Chianciano prefers to market its Etruscan past - those Romans are less interesting.
