The invention of the Emoticon
I am delighted to read that the anniversary of the invention of the emoticon heralded this week ("Smiley" turns 25) may not be the real origin - Benjamin Zimmerman at Language Log discusses earlier phenomena, and reproduces Ambrose Bierce's typographical innovation, a "snigger point or note of cachinnation."
