Jewish Messianism - the big one, Sabbetai Zvi

The story of the 17th century messianic leader Sabbetai Zvi (or Sabbatai Sevi, however you want to transliterate it) never ceases to fascinate me. Here's an interesting story about the remnants of the Doenmeh, his loyal followers, in Turkey, prompted by a plan to tear down the Zvi's house in Izmir.

It's worth reading the comments to the story to see some contemporary Jewish reaction to the perceived threat of messianism to the survival of the Jewish people.
