New Camera!

Well, after the waiting I got my new camera last night . . .

I bought mine off Ken Rockwell's Holiday Camera Guide - I enjoy his reviews.

I've been using a Minolta Dimage X for about 3 years and love it - but the gate over the lens is starting to be a little flaky. Sometimes it closes, sometimes it doesn't. So, it was time for a new small digital camera. I've read a bunch of reviews and even borrowed a camera once while in NYC, but I came back to price. I have a Nikon D70 for serious (that is, architectural) pictures and don't need a pile of features or a pricey camera for my everyday-in-the-bookbag camera so the Canon PowerShot A530, at about $150 seems like a good fit (and I got mine from J&R/Amazon for $153.12, including shipping).

So far, so good - I've only posted a couple of pictures to my flickr stream (click or see the right column of the blog), but more will be coming. I really like the weight (no more than the Dimage) and the grip (much more stable than the Dimage). One of the things that always annoyed me about the Minolta was the juxtaposition of the power button and the shutter release - I turned the camera off many times when I was about to snap a picture. The controls for the A530 are pretty clear (I haven't messed up anything so far!), and it's especially easy to mess with the flash controls (something that drives me nuts on the D70).

Another thing that helped me decide on the A530 were the AA batteries. I am VERY tired of battery memory making rechargeables less useful after only a year - AND I don't have to have a stupid charger in my travel set.

I'm sure I'll have more to say as I get familiar with it!
